1     INTRODUCTION
Cape Cod Wood Siding Inc. makes every effort to produce high quality siding products. Any product found to be unsatisfactory for any reason must not be installed. If you encounter any unsuitable product STOP and call us at 01 4931034.

Cape Cod's responsibility is to replace any material found to be unacceptable prior to installation. Cape Cod Finished Wood Siding Inc. does not warrant the installation of its product. The following installation instructions are guidelines created in accordance with the National Building Code of Canada. PLEASE CHECK WITH THE LOCAL AUTHORITIES FOR PARTICULAR INSTALLATION CODES IN YOUR AREA. IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE INSTALLER TO ENSURE THAT THE SIDING IS CORRECTLY INSTALLED.




2     IMPORTANT INSTALLER RESPONSIBILITIES
A) Seal all cuts with Cape Cod Touch Up Paint.
B) Use a chalk line, story pole or jig block to obtain a 1/16" clearance between shiplap joints.
C) Nails must penetrate solid wood, i.e. sheathing and stud by 1 1/4". Nailing to the sheathing only, does not properly secure the siding.
D) Siding must not be installed over wet sheathing. Use kiln dried sheathing and strapping. Allow rain soaked materials to dry prior.
E) Butt joints must be made over solid wood to provide secure nailing. For best results miter butt joints 22o.
F) Do not lift pieces to allow for alignment. Cut along the top and touch up the cut. Raising one end results in unlocking.





3     MAKING WALLS WATERPROOF
Weatherproofing exterior walls requires the proper application of an approved sheathing membrane under the siding as required by the National Building Code of Canada. The purpose of the sheathing membrane is to provide a continuous barrier to prevent drafts and the entry of wind-driven rain into the wall cavity.

Joints in the siding are not designed to prevent passage of wind and rain. Passage of wind and moisture into the wall may occur, with sustained exposure to strong winds. Moisture may be driven through nail penetrations and overlap joints of sheathing membrane. In such exposures, improved resistance against moisture penetration may be obtained by a modified construction technique known as the Rain Screen Method in which the siding is fastened to vertical wood strapping placed over the sheathing membrane and attached to the wall studs. This construction technique provides an air space for wind-driven moisture to flow by gravity down the back face of the siding to vents at the bottom of the wall. Construction details utilizing the Rain Screen strapping method can be obtained by contacting any office of the Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation in Canada.

4 INSTALLING CAPE COD SIDING OVER RIGID INSULATION

DO NOT APPLY CAPE COD SIDING DIRECTLY OVER RIGID INSULATION

Rigid foam sheathing can cause moisture to accumulate on the back of siding and cause staining, buckling and damage to finish coats. The Application of Cape Cod Siding over rigid foam sheathing must meet the following conditions:


 Cape Cod Siding must be applied to strapping, creating an air space between siding and rigid foam or fiberglass. Strapping must be a full 1" thick and kiln dried. Air space allows for the venting of accumulated moisture.

Building paper or an equivalent building wrap must be applied over the foam sheathing, glass clad, etc.

In addition to the above conditions the following recommendations are meant to minimize potential problems when wood sidings are applied over rigid foam sheathing and other rigid insulations:


 Use thicker siding patterns in widths of 6 in. or less. Thick, narrow siding is more stable than thinner, wider patterns and better able to resist dimensional changes.

Choose light colors to maximize heat reflection and reduce dimensional movement




5     STORAGE
Keep siding dry prior to installation. Cape Cod shall not be responsible for problems caused by improper storage or handling. Store siding off the ground on a flat surface under a roof or under a waterproof covering. Cape Cod's finish is a breathable acrylic paint that allows for the transfer of moisture in and out of the siding. If the siding gets wet it will expand across the width.




6     CAULKING
Use Cape Cod color-matched or clear caulking.
1) Caulk all siding butt joints with a small bead.
2) Caulk all joints where siding meets corners, windows, doors and all trim.

8     NAILING INSTRUCTIONS

USE CAPE COD FINISHED WOOD SIDING NAILS.

NAIL AT 16" CENTERS INTO STUDS.

DRIVE NAILS SO THE HEAD IS JUST IN CONTACT WITH
THE SIDING SURFACE.

If nails are driven below the surface, they must be sealed.
Failure to do so voids coating warranty.

Nails must penetrate solid wood by 1 1/4".

Do not use power nailers

    12     SIDING MUST NOT CONTACT MASONRY


    		Space siding 1/2" away from foundation.

    		DO NOT LET SIDING COME IN DIRECT CONTACT WITH ANY FORM OF CONCRETE.

    		Lap bottom sill plate by 1/2"



    13     REPAIRS AND TOUCH UP

    		It is the installers responsibility to repair minor scrapes and damage created during installation of Cape Cod Finished Wood Siding.

    		Minor damage to finished surface must be cleaned and painted with two coats of Cape Cod touch-up paint.

    		All ends must be sealed with Cape Cod Touch-up Paint.

    		Large wood surfaces created by ripping an mitering must be protected with a minimum of two coats of Cape Cod Touch-up Paint.




    14     SIDING INSTALLATION TIPS

    		Horizontal application only for a rabbeted bevel and cove.

    		Vertical application only for a board & batten and channel siding.

    		Horizontal or vertical application for v-joint.

    		Provide a minimum of 6" finish grade ground clearance.
    Check local bylaws

    		A continuous positive vapor barrier must be installed on the inside of conditioned exterior walls.
